Orthodontic Treatment
If you feel that your smile could be straighter, then you might want it improved. That's Orthodontics!
I feel there are essentially two types of Orthodontic treatment:-
| 1. |
Early, preventive, interceptive treatment |
| and |
|
| 2. |
Standard, curative, adult dentition treatment |
1. Early treatments carried out before all the baby (deciduous) teeth are shed - at some time between 6 and 11 years of age (usually 9 or 10).
This is often "non extraction" in nature and aims to intercept developing problems, thus preventing major difficulties from developing.
Early treatment is a preventative, holistic approach and requires early referral - as soon as a problem is noticed. See non extraction treatment for further details.
2. Standard, treatment waits for the problem to fully develop and then treats it, sometimes with the extraction of adult teeth, usually after 11 years of age.
This approach is most commonly used in the UK and is curative in philosophy - for example, see case 1. |
These two approaches are quite different in philosophy and treatment methods but both are useful and appropriate to different patients. Younger patients often have the option of either type but once the remaining baby teeth have gone, standard treatment is generally the only option.
