Case of the month 27/9/07
This month's case is a simple but very satisfying one.
Just a small gap but a source of great pleasure to the patient to see it closed (and to me).
A rapid change over just a few months.

Spam and what to do about it 13/9/07
We suffer terribly, like most people, from a deluge of Spam into our e-mail accounts.
But I've found a solution.
Spamfighter from www.spamfighter.com is superb and you can download a free version.
It seems to cut out all of those annoying spams, leaving your inbox clear.
in our case, it filters out about 200 a day.
Top tip.

I'm a Trainer 4/9/07
Just got back from a day at the headquarters of the British Orthodontic Society, during which I learnt about the new training scheme for Orthodontists and - guess what - I'm enrolled as a trainer.
This promises to be a very interesting process indeed.
It seems that the days of good old fashioned lectures are over - nowadays trainee Orthodontists log on to something called "Blackboard" and get most of their lectures, notes and course material over the internet.
It seems I get my student for the "Diploma in Primary Care Orthodontics" quite soon.

Arch Development 20/8/07
There's been a huge upsurge of interest in our non-extraction / arch development approach to treatment recently.
In recent weeks I've started several such cases in children of around 9 or 10 years of age.
It is heartening to see parents who care enough about their children's teeth to consider this very advanced (and expensive) technique.
I know they'll be pleased with the results a couple of years down the line.

Great progress 25/7/07
It's such a fantastic time to be in Orthodontics.
Never a week goes by without some significant development in equipment or technology.
A small example - just today I learnt how to access our server from my desktop computer at home. |
So now I can spend all my evenings and weekends working on practice administration instead of just most of them - an improvement ???
The new Orthodontic Appliance systems e.g. the Damon System (below) and In-Ovation are just such fun to work with - I'm getting stuck into both - it's a real thrill to be using something new and whizzy.
Gosh, such fun. |

Case of the month 6/7/07
This eleven year old boy was very conscious of his "goofy front teeth". |
| |
| |
As with so many cases, he was teased and ridiculed at school.
But after 18 months of non-extraction Orthodontic treatment... |
| |
No headgear was used - just Orthopaedic and fixed appliances. |
| |
I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's such a privilege to be able to achieve such transformations, that really do make a difference to peoples' lives. |

Practice Development 1/7/07
It's been clear for a long time that our practice needs to expand.
We just can't cope with the sheer volume of patients who would like to consult us for their Orthodontic needs. |
So I have a cunning plan ....................
Watch this space.

Damon Brackets 15/06/07
We've started using the latest and (allegedly) the best of the new Orthodontic bracket systems - the Damon System.
These brackets are getting rave reviews as they are said to be quicker, easier and the system requires fewer extractions.
A few of our patients have already got them on.
As you would expect, like anything new, these brackets cost up to 10 times as much as the ones they replace - mmmm. |

Waiting, waiting, waiting 12/6/07
We had a call today about our waiting list for new NHS patients.
The caller felt that 28 months (which it is at present and getting longer) was unacceptable.
I agree - it's astonishing.
But what can we do about it?
Our NHS contract limits us to a fixed number of cases per year and there's no more state funding available. |
As a practice, we suffer from our own popularity.
I had a chat with an Orthodontist from California at the recent American Orthodontic Conference. He couldn't believe our situation. "Hey" he said "If you've got any surplus patients, send them to me!".
In California, they're short of work.
Fancy traveling to the US every month to have your brace adjusted?
I doubt the NHS would pay business class. |

American Conference - Seattle 29/5/07
Just back from the annual conference of the American Association of orthodontists - always a great trip. It was in Seattle this year - an interesting and pleasant city.
This conference is VAST.
There were over 21,000 delegates from all over the world for a packed and superb few days.
This meeting is the annual essential trip for anyone wanting to keep up with the ever changing world of Orthodontics.
Managed to pick up some of the latest software for imaging and numerous "toys and tools".
The inevitable jet lag is going to make the next few days difficult though. |

Homeopathy Course 12/5/07
Today was the final day of my 4 year, part-time Homeopathy course at the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital.
It's been a great experience and I'm very sorry it's over. |
Numerous patients have benefited - scores of mouth ulcers and cold sores have disappeared much sooner that they otherwise would and a lot of warts too!
Ah well, all good things come to an end. |
